Preserve, Protect and Defend
Currently, we see numerous politicians taking an oath to "preserve, protect, and defend the constitution." I hope they are committing to the essence of our foundational document, rather than preserving the status quo.
Shall we PRESERVE the balance of powers as we know it, despite it being seriously skewed by the actions of our two oligarchies, constantly seeking to dominate the halls of government?
Shall we PROTECT the rights outlined in our constitution, even though they are incomplete due to the absence of protections made necessary by modern times?
Shall we DEFEND popular sovereignty in its current anemic state, allowing us only to choose (every couple of years) between two pre-selected, often unworthy, candidates?
OR
Might we better PRESERVE the balance of powers by establishing a fourth branch of government, making The Citizenry an equal partner in the their own governance?
Should we incorporate the right to Privacy into our protections and then add a section on fundamental citizen responsibilities (a subject completely overlooked in the original document)?
Could we move towards a true Democracy by ensuring that the Citizenry can easily initiate changes in national policy and have their decisions govern the actions of the other three branches of government? This, I contend, is the path to an enduring greatness for America, our legacy to this and future worlds.
